Backlit Acrylic vs. Fabric Light Boxes: Which One Should You Choose?

by Prime Light Boxes Team on Aug 18, 2026

If you're deciding between a backlit acrylic light box and a fabric light box, the choice usually comes down to three things: the finish you want, how often you'll change the graphic, and your budget. Both work equally well for commercial displays and at home — artwork, family photos, and faux-window scenes are some of the most popular uses for either style. Both use the same even-glow LED backlighting — the difference is in the face material.

Backlit Acrylic Light Boxes

Acrylic light boxes use a rigid, glass-like acrylic face for a premium, gallery-quality finish. They hold their shape perfectly flat, resist glare well, and give graphics a crisp, glossy presentation that reads as high-end. The printed acrylic is permanently mounted during installation and can't be swapped out afterward, so they're best suited to artwork, family photos, or displays you're confident you won't need to change. See sizing and pricing on our Backlit Acrylic Light Box page, starting at $330 CAD.

Fabric Light Boxes

Fabric light boxes use a tensioned SEG (Silicone Edge Graphic) fabric face that zips in and out of the frame. They're lighter, easier to ship, and make swapping seasonal or promotional graphics simple — no tools required, whether that's refreshing a retail display or updating family photos at home. The softer fabric finish also diffuses light a bit more evenly across large panels. Configure your size on our Fabric Light Box page, also starting at $330 CAD.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose backlit acrylic if the image is permanent — a lobby feature, a fixed storefront window, or a piece of family artwork you're confident you'll want on the wall for years — and a glossy, high-end look matters more than flexibility.

Choose fabric if you expect to update the graphic, whether that's seasonally, for promotions, or as your family photos change, or you need something lighter for a trade show booth or a large-format install where shipping weight matters.

Either option ships with the same LED engine, so brightness and lifespan are comparable, and both work equally well in a home or a business — the decision really is about finish and whether the image needs to change.
